The song Isoo Antti is one of the early milestones of Finnish jazz and popular music. It was recorded in 1929 and represents the transitional phase of its time from traditional dance music towards jazz-influenced playing.

The background music for the piece was provided by Yrjö’s Orchestra, which was founded in 1929 in Kuopio. The band was led by saxophonist Yrjö Gunaropulos, and the lineup also included his brother Anatoli Gunaropulos (banjo), pianist Eero Hyvärinen, and vocalist Markus Rautio, who is better known as Uncle Markus.

My character designs are based on historical depictions of people, and I cannot say exactly what they looked like at that time, as there is no direct evidence. However, I found out that this first recording was likely made at Kaivohuone in Helsinki, so I reconstructed it based on Kaivohuone’s visual material to be roughly contemporary. This is not a historical account, but rather an exploration of a possibility that is logical.

This also applies to Iso-Antti and Rannanjärvi. The image of the last scene is authentic in that it was made from their shackling photo. Enjoy!
